above / belowProjects2026
Amid the horrifying events of the present day, many face a paralyzing fear of the future. This fear can make it difficult to look for or commit to solutions. The text below aims to help unfreeze action through critical design. By distancing ourselves from the status quo through a work of speculative fiction, we can re-evaluate possible solutions. We defamiliarize ourselves with the “real” world to look toward the future with fresh eyes. The work below places the viewer in the year 2032 and allows them to interact with artifacts from this speculative future society. It allows us to ask ourselves what these people did right, what they did wrong, and what we should carry with us into the real 2032.

above / below is a speculative design project that explores how speculative fiction can be combined with communication design to encourage values of mutual aid and collective survival. The project consisted of research, making, and writing in a speculative journal. The full process can be explored here.

Spokane ExposBranding2026
The Spokane Expos are an exercise in team branding. I love the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) and started thinking about what a team located in my hometown of Spokane, WA, would look like. I used the original branding of Spokane’s 1974 World Fair to develop a color scheme for the team. I also used the font Piniot Grigio Modern because it is similar to the World Fair’s typeface but with a slightly more modern twist. For the actual shape of the logo, I looked towards the purple butterfly kite located in downtown Spokane, next to the arena where the team would play. The name “Spokane Expos” also serves as a callback to the 1974 Exposition.

This is a piece of speculative design.
Good News This Week PostcardsProjectOn Going
Originally started because my parents were expressing a deep despair about the state of the world. I wanted to remind them that there are still small, happy moments. There is still good news, it just might not be the top headline. Each week (give or take), I send them a postcard that has 5 pieces of good news on it. They can be personal (ie, ‘I went to get my bone stabbed’), political (ie, ‘Pam Bondi was fired as attorney general’), or just feel good (ie, ‘Renewable hit 49% of global electricity capacity in 2025).

There is still good in the world. The minute we forget that is the moment the bastards win.
Tolkien Sweater CollectionKnit2026
The Tolkien sweater collection was based on my love for the stories of J.R.R Tolkien. So many of the stories include small physical motifs or illustrations that defined my childhood. From Arwen’s evenstar necklace to the fellowship brooch. This collection features three sweaters knitted on a Shima Seika SVR machine. The first is a boatneck sweater with the Smoug illustration from the first page of The Hobbit. The second is a cardigan featuring the fellowship brooch. The final one is a muscle t-shirt style top with Arwen’s Evenstar pendant.

    Artist Statement

My work explores the intersection of design, material, and meaning through a process rooted in both intention and experimentation. I am drawn to the tactile and visual possibilities of print, composition, and form, using design as a way to translate complex ideas into accessible, engaging experiences.

Across my practice, I am interested in how visual language shapes perception—how typography, image, and structure can communicate beyond words. I approach each project as a system, balancing clarity with disruption, and precision with play. Whether working digitally or physically, I emphasize process as much as outcome, allowing iteration and discovery to guide the final piece.

Influenced by both contemporary design culture and traditional methods, my work often reflects a tension between order and fragmentation. I aim to create pieces that invite close looking—where layered details, subtle shifts, and intentional imperfections reveal themselves over time. Ultimately, my practice is about connection: between viewer and object, concept and execution, and idea and experience. Through design, I seek to create work that is not only visually compelling but also thoughtful, inquisitive, and resonant.

    About

Kath(erine) Davis is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer working at the intersection of information design, typography, and experimental visual storytelling. Currently pursuing an MFA in Communications Design at Pratt Institute, their work explores how data, narrative, and form can be translated into engaging visual systems and interactive experiences.

Her background in architecture and philosophy from Connecticut College informs a thoughtful, systems-oriented approach to design. They are particularly interested in how structure, language, and visual communication shape the way information is understood.

Alongside their studies, Katherine works as a Research Assistant in the Pratt Production Labs, where they operate Shima knitting machines and support students in developing computational textile projects. Their experience also includes graphic design work for community organizations such as FRESH New London, as well as roles in admissions and outreach, where they developed strong communication and collaborative skills. Working across both digital and physical media, Katherine brings a balance of conceptual rigor and playful experimentation to their practice.
